What's Behind Your Home's Exterior?

When most homeowners think about their home’s exterior, they picture the obvious things: stucco, siding, stone, windows, roofing, and paint. But some of the most important components of your exterior are the ones you rarely—if ever—see. Behind the finished surface is an entire system designed to manage water, control moisture, allow drainage, protect the structure, and help your exterior last for decades. Understanding these hidden components can help homeowners recognize potential problems earlier and make better decisions when repairing, remodeling, or building a home.
1. The Water-Resistive Barrier Behind Your Exterior
Behind most stucco, siding, and other exterior cladding systems is a water-resistive barrier (WRB). The WRB acts as a secondary line of defense against moisture that gets past the exterior surface. This is important because stucco, stone, siding, and other claddings shouldn't be treated as the home's only waterproofing layer. A properly installed WRB helps direct water away from the wall assembly before it can reach the structural sheathing and framing. Poor installation, penetrations, or improperly integrated flashing can allow moisture behind the exterior, potentially leading to rot, mold, deterioration, and costly repairs.
2. Window and Door Flashing
Windows and doors create some of the most vulnerable areas in a building's exterior.
That's why proper window and door flashing is so important. Flashing is designed to direct water away from openings and integrate them with the surrounding water-management system. When flashing is missing or incorrectly installed, water can work its way behind the exterior without producing an obvious problem for months or even years. By the time staining, damaged drywall, deteriorated sheathing, or other symptoms appear, the moisture problem may already be significant.
3. Control and Expansion Joints
Those lines running through a stucco wall aren't necessarily decorative.
Control joints and expansion joints help accommodate movement within exterior wall systems. Buildings naturally move because of temperature changes, material expansion and contraction, structural movement, and other forces. Proper joint placement helps manage that movement and reduces the likelihood of uncontrolled cracking.
While no stucco system can guarantee that cracks will never occur, proper installation practices can help control where movement occurs.
4. Fasteners
You probably don't spend much time thinking about the screws, nails, clips, and other fasteners holding your exterior together. But contractors certainly should. Different siding and exterior systems have specific requirements for fastener type, length, spacing, placement, and corrosion resistance. Improper fastening can contribute to loose siding, movement, cracking, buckling, water intrusion, and even complete material failure.

5. Lath and Fiberglass Mesh Reinforcement in Stucco Systems
Traditional stucco isn't simply applied directly to a house. Depending on the wall assembly and stucco system, components such as metal lath, fiberglass mesh reinforcement, accessories, base materials, and weather barriers may exist beneath the finished surface. These components help support the stucco system and contribute to its long-term performance. Once the finish coat is installed, you'll never see most of them again—which makes proper installation during construction especially important.
